सदगृहस्थों के आठ लक्षण

सदगृहस्थों के लक्षण बताते हुए महर्षि अत्रि कहते हैं कि अनसूया, शौच, मंगल, अनायास, अस्पृहा, दम, दान तथा दया – ये आठ श्रेष्ठ विप्रों तथा सदगृहस्थों के लक्षण हैं । यहाँ इनका संक्षिप्त परिचय दिया जा रहा हैः

अनसूयाः जो गुणवानों के गुणों का खंडन नहीं करता, स्वल्प गुण रखने वालों की भी प्रशंसा करता है और दूसरों के दोषों को देखकर उनका परिहास नहीं करता – यह भाव अनसूया कहलाता है ।

शौचः अभक्ष्य-भक्षण का परित्याग, निंदित व्यक्तियों का संसर्ग न करना तथा आचार – (शौचाचार-सदाचार) विचार का परिपालन – यह शौच कहलाता है)

मंगलः श्रेष्ठ व्यक्तियों तथा शास्त्रमर्यादित प्रशंसनीय आचरण का नित्य व्यवहार, अप्रशस्त (निंदनीय) आचरण का परित्याग – इसे धर्म के तत्त्व को जानने वाले महर्षियों द्वारा ʹमंगलʹ नाम से कहा गया है ।

अनायासः जिस शुभ अथवा अशुभ कर्म के द्वारा शरीर पीड़ित होता हो, ऐसे व्यवहार को बहुत अधिक न करना अथवा सहज भाव से आसानीपूर्वक किया जा सके उसे करने का भाव ʹअनायासʹ कहलाता है ।

अस्पृहाः स्वयं अपने-आप प्राप्त हुए पदार्थ में सदा संतुष्ट रहना और दूसरे की स्त्री की अभिलाषा नहीं रखना – यह भाव ʹअस्पृहाʹ कहलाता है ।

दमः जो दूसरे के द्वारा उत्पन्न बाह्य (शारीरिक) अथवा आध्यात्मिक दुःख या कष्ट के प्रतिकारस्वरूप उस पर न तो कोई कोप करता है और न उसे मारने की चेष्टा करता है अर्थात् कियी भी प्रकार से न तो स्वयं उद्वेग की स्थिति में होता है और न दूसरे को उद्वेलित करता है, उसका यह समता में स्थित रहने का भाव ʹदमʹ कहलाता है ।

दानः ʹप्रत्येक दिन दान देना कर्तव्य हैʹ – यह समझकर अपने स्वल्प में भी अंतरात्मा से प्रसन्न होकर प्रयत्नपूर्वक यत्किंचित देना ʹदानʹ कहलाता है ।

दयाः दूसरे में, अपने बंधुवर्ग में, मित्र में, शत्रु में, तथा द्वेष करने वाले में अर्थात् सम्पूर्ण चराचर संसार में एवं सभी प्राणियों में अपने समान ही सुख-दुःख की प्रतीति करना और सबमें आत्मभाव-परमात्मभाव समझकर सबको अपने ही समान समझकर प्रीति का व्यवहार करना – ऐसा भाव ʹदयाʹ कहलाता है । महर्षि अत्रि कहते हैं, इन लक्षणों से युक्त शुद्ध सदगृहस्थ अपने उत्तम धर्माचरण से श्रेष्ठ स्थान को प्राप्त कर लेता है, पुनः उसका जन्म नहीं होता और वह मुक्त हो जाता हैः

यश्चैतैर्लक्षणैर्युक्तो गृहस्थोઽपि भवेद् द्विजः।
स गच्छति परं स्थानं जायते नेह वै पुनः।।
(अत्रि संहिताः 2.42)

Eight characteristics of virtuous people

Describing the characteristics of Sadgrihasthas, Maharishi Atri says that Anasuya, Shauchha, Mangal, Aanayas, Aspriha, Dam, Daan and Daya – these are the eight best vices and characteristics of Sadgrihasthas. Here is a brief introduction of them:

Anasuya: One who does not refute the qualities of the virtuous, praises even those who have little qualities and does not make fun of others after seeing their faults – this feeling is called Anasuya.

Shaucha: Abstaining from non-food items, not associating with condemned persons and following the principles of Aachar – (purity-morality) – this is called Shaucha.)

Mangal: Daily behavior of great persons and praiseworthy conduct as per the scriptures, abandonment of unpleasant (condemnable) conduct – this has been called as ‘Mangal’ by the great sages who know the essence of religion.

Spontaneously: The feeling of not doing too much of the auspicious or inauspicious action due to which the body suffers or doing something that can be done easily with a natural feeling is called ‘spontaneously’.

Aspṛhā: Always being satisfied with one’s self-acquired things and not having any desire for someone else’s woman – this feeling is called ‘Aspṛhā’.

Damah: One who neither gets angry at another person nor tries to kill him in retaliation for the external (physical) or spiritual pain or suffering caused by him, that is, neither himself nor others are in a state of anxiety in any way. This feeling of being situated in equanimity is called ‘Dam’.

Donation: ‘It is a duty to donate every day’ – Understanding this and giving even in small things, being happy with conscience and making an effort, is called ‘donation’.

Compassion: To believe in happiness and sorrow in others, in one’s relatives, friends, enemies and haters, i.e. in the entire living world and in all the living beings, to have the same happiness and sorrow as one’s self and to understand everyone as one’s own self and to have a sense of self and God. To behave like this is called ‘kindness’. Maharishi Atri says, a pure Sadgrihastha having these characteristics attains the best position by his good conduct of Dharma, he is not born again and he becomes free.
