Nalanda University’s School of Historical Studies marked a significant academic milestone on February 1, 2025, by hosting a series of Special Lectures on “Greek History, Literature, and Culture” in Rajgir. This distinguished event brought together renowned scholars from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, who explored the enduring legacy of Greek civilization and its deep interconnections with global history, particularly its ties to Indian heritage. Adding to the occasion’s prestige, Greek dignitaries unveiled a remarkable book by Shyam Sunder Rao, further enriching the scholarly discourse.
The event commenced with the screening of the Nalanda University video. Dr. Kashshaf Ghani, Faculty Member, School of Historical Studies, introduced the distinguished speakers, followed by a felicitation ceremony of the speakers. Vice Chancellor [i] Prof Abhay Kumar Singh welcomed the Greek scholars emphasizing the historical and cultural significance of age-old Indo-Greek connections. “The two civilizations held appreciation for each other and enriched the world culture,” he said. He mentioned about the upcoming Centre of India Greece Studies in the Nalanda University.

The special lectures provided insights into the evolution of Greek thought, literature, and cultural narratives that have profoundly influenced global intellectual traditions. Prof. Angeliki Ziaka presented a lecture on “The Knowledge of Hinduism and Buddhism in Greece,” offering a perspective on ancient religious interactions. Prof. Shaker Moussa delivered an insightful doscourse on “The Orient in Greek Literature: A Review of Ancient and Modern Greek Literary Texts,” examining how Eastern philosophies and narratives have shaped Greek literary traditions. Dr. Ioanna Naoum presented on “Constantinos Theotokis, An ‘Enchanted’ Modern Writer: Cross-Cultural Osmosis and Social Concerns,” shedding light on cross-cultural influences and their impact on modern literature.
Following these enriching lectures, an engaging discussion and Q&A session took place, where faculty and students exchanged ideas with the speakers, fostering a stimulating academic discourse. The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Kishore Dhavala, Faculty Member, School of Ecology and Environment Studies, and Deputy Dean, International Relations, Nalanda University.
