Rajgir, Bihar — On August 15, 2026, Nalanda University commemorated India’s 80th Independence Day with a vibrant celebration centered on youth leadership, global interconnectedness, and inclusive learning. The event commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by Vice Chancellor Professor Sachin Chaturvedi, followed by an inspiring address and cultural performances from the university’s international student body.

In his address, Professor Chaturvedi highlighted Nalanda’s expanding global footprint, marking a major milestone as enrollment crossed 1,000 students representing 35 nationalities, with applicants hailing from 72 countries. Emphasizing the role of Yuva Shakti in shaping the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, he called upon young scholars to serve as architects of the future by actively engaging in university governance, academic life, and broader social responsibilities. He noted that connecting the world through shared knowledge was central to Nalanda’s civilisational legacy long before modern concepts of globalisation emerged.

Looking ahead, the Vice Chancellor outlined key institutional priorities, including interdisciplinary research clusters, international exchanges, student-led journals, and expanding academic offerings such as new programs in Data Science and AI, Science and Technology Policy Studies, and Sanskrit. He also emphasized community engagement through the Sahabhagita initiative and announced an enhanced allocation of ₹40 lakh for LEAP 2.0 to support voluntary student contributions to local communities. Additionally, he urged students to cultivate critical digital literacy and approach emerging global challenges with an interdisciplinary mindset.

The celebrations also hosted a high-level panel discussion titled “Global Justice, Peace and Sustainability: The Role of Universities.” Chaired by Professor Sachin Chaturvedi, the panel featured global thought leaders including Professor Thomas Pogge of Yale University, Mr. Erik Solheim, former Norwegian Minister of the Environment and International Development, Professor Amitabh Mattoo of Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Professor Anjoo Sharan Upadhyay of Banaras Hindu University. Together, they explored how higher education institutions can effectively respond to pressing questions of peace, ethics, and sustainability in an evolving global order.
