Rajgir, Nalanda, Bihar | Monday, 3 August 2026: Nalanda University today formally welcomed its new cohort of students for the Academic Session 2026–28, bringing together scholars from across India and around the world.

The induction programme introduced students to the University’s academic philosophy, campus life and distinctive approach to postgraduate education, underscoring its growing international character. This year the University crossed the milestone of 1,000 students, with applications and enrolments reflecting a significant rise in global participation. Students of diverse nationalities and academic backgrounds will join a vibrant multicultural campus community in Rajgir.

Addressing the incoming students, Vice Chancellor Professor Sachin Chaturvedi encouraged them to embrace curiosity, question established assumptions and engage with ideas beyond their own disciplines. He noted that a Nalanda education is rooted in dialogue, interdisciplinary learning and the pursuit of knowledge through inquiry rather than ready-made answers.

“At Nalanda, learning begins with the willingness to ask questions and to remain open to new perspectives. The University’s strength lies in bringing together diverse disciplines, cultures and intellectual traditions to collectively advance knowledge,” he said.

Emphasising the research-oriented academic ecosystem, Professor Chaturvedi said the institution seeks to nurture scholars capable of addressing contemporary global challenges through critical thinking, collaboration and original research. He highlighted the commitment to integrating Indian Knowledge Systems with contemporary scholarship in a manner that encourages dialogue and co-creation rather than intellectual binaries.

He outlined academic initiatives for the new batch, including a common interdisciplinary foundation course titled “Nalanda”, a compulsory course in Research Methodology, a revised credit framework promoting greater classroom engagement, and the integration of Śāstrārtha as a structured platform for dialogue, reasoned debate and collaborative learning. He also spoke about Sahabhāgitā, the University’s community engagement initiative connecting students with neighbouring villages through research-based partnerships and experiential learning.

Reaffirming commitment to sustainability, Professor Chaturvedi encouraged students to adopt environmentally responsible practices and contribute to the Net Zero campus ethos. He highlighted expanding opportunities for international collaboration, student exchange, research partnerships and holistic development through academic, cultural and co-curricular initiatives.

The inaugural session was attended by Swadha Rizvi, IFS, Regional Director, Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, who delivered the Student Induction Lecture. Welcoming the students, she highlighted the rich diversity of Nalanda University’s academic community and spoke about its inclusive student support mechanisms. She encouraged students to value their time, honour academic commitments and demonstrate responsible conduct while embracing the cultural diversity that makes Nalanda a truly international campus.

The programme was also addressed by the Registrar, Deans of the Schools Professor G. Mishra, Professor D. Venkat Rao and Professor Arvind Kumar, along with various committee heads. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Indrani Barpujari, Visiting Faculty, School of Ecology and Environment Studies.
