Rajgir, Nalanda, September 17: The auspicious beginning of the East Asia Summit (EAS) Conclave of Heads of Higher Education Institutions and Knowledge Exchange Workshop on Energy Efficiency & Mission-LiFE was marked by a solemn and traditional Deep Prajwalan (lighting of the lamp) ceremony at Nalanda University’s Sushma Swaraj Auditorium. This symbolic act, often signifying the dispelling of darkness and the ushering in of knowledge and prosperity, set a contemplative tone for the important deliberations ahead. Following this, distinguished leaders, esteemed scholars, and insightful policy experts, representing a diverse group of 18 participating countries, were formally welcomed and felicitated, underscoring the significance of their presence and the collaborative spirit that underpins this vital summit focused on higher education and sustainable practices.
Professor Sachin Chaturvedi, Vice Chancellor, Nalanda University, delivered the welcome address. He expressed gratitude to the Ministry of External Affairs, RIS, TERI, ASEAN partners, and all the international and Indian delegates. Reflecting on Asian value systems, he spoke about the convergence of humanities and natural sciences, the philosophy of Shunyata and Oneness, and Nalanda University’s commitment to Net Zero goals.
Prof. Chaturvedi mentioned, “Nalanda is living idea of knowledge without boundaries. As we gather here, we reaffirm that education and cooperation remains the strongest pathways to peace, sustainability and shared prosperity.”
Director General, RIS, a Ministry of external affair’s think tank, Prof. Sachin Kumar Sharma highlighted the need for deeper research and institutional cooperation across the EAS region. Jiwesh Nandan from TERI emphasized lifestyle transitions for sustainability and the importance of Mission LiFE. Prof. Ngo Thi Phuong Lan from Vietnam reflected on Nalanda’s timeless legacy and the urgent call for climate action.
The Keynote Address was delivered by Periasamy Kumaran, Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, who highlighted ASEAN partnerships, the role of digital research, and formally declared the Conclave open. He mentioned that Nalanda symbolizes India’s civilizational linkages with Asia and continues to inspire collective progress.
