Nalanda University Celebrates 79th Independence Day with Patriotism and Community Spirit

August 15, 2025, Rajgir, Nalanda, Bihar: Nalanda University celebrated India’s 79th Independence Day with grandeur, dignity and deep patriotic fervour at its scenic Rajgir campus. The function began with the Vice Chancellor Professor Sachin Chaturvedi unfurling the National Flag, followed by the National Anthem rendered by students, and a disciplined March Past by the University Security Guards.

In his address, Professor Chaturvedi reflected on the nation’s remarkable journey over the past 78 years, the critical role of youth in shaping the future, and the University’s enduring mission to serve as a beacon of inclusive and boundaryless learning. He said, “At Nalanda, the ancient ideal of ‘यत्र विश्वं भवत्येक-नीडम्’—where the whole world dwells as one nest—is a living reality. With students from over twenty nations learning together, we embody harmony in diversity, and reaffirm our commitment to innovation, responsibility, and service to humanity.”

The student gathering was also addressed by distinguished guests Ambassador Abhay K., Educationist Vivekanand Pai, Policy Expert Hemang Jani and Social Entrepreneur Manohar Shinde, whose words reinforced the themes of leadership, social responsibility and the transformative power of education. A symbolic highlight was the Gyana Daṇḍa Pratiṣṭhā with Vedic recitals, representing the University’s unique mission of blending India’s timeless knowledge heritage with modern education.

A vibrant cultural programme showcased the rich cultural heritage of India through music, dance and artistic performances. The celebrations concluded with group photographs and a formal Vote of Thanks, encapsulating the collective pride and spirit of the University community.

The celebrations also highlighted Nalanda University’s recent strides in academia, innovation, and community engagement. In just two months, faculty and students achieved over 50 research publications and represented the University at major international forums, including the World Archaeology Congress and the ASEAN Foundation Meeting in Jakarta. New initiatives such as the Integrated Incubation Centre, the “Spirit of Nalanda” course, and the Centre for Studies in Development and Sustainability reflect a forward-looking academic vision. Through Sahabhāgita Saṃvāda, the University strengthens ties with neighbouring villages, while sustainability efforts advance towards a Net-Zero campus, enriched by the Ayurvedic Vana medicinal garden. This Independence Day celebrated India’s heritage while reaffirming Nalanda’s role in shaping an inclusive and innovative future.
